Snail caviar from Sicily is among the most precious products at Milan Expo 2015. It is among the top 10 most expensive food products together with champagne with golden dust, truffles from the Marche region and Swarovski wine. Among the most special products on display at the pavilion of farmers’ association Coldiretti at the world’s fair are the most sought-after ‘jewels’ of Italian agriculture.
The objective is to get visitors acquainted with the variety of Italian-made food products that were saved from homogenization by Italian farmers.
Three Sicilians make snail caviar: Davide Merlino, Michelandelo and Giuseppe Sansone. They own the “Lumaca madonita” company in Campofelice di Roccella, near Palermo. They sell their product in Russia, Switzerland and Dubai to top chefs and niche markets. Caviar is currently sold at 1,800 euros per kilo.
